The Faded — When The Self Begins To Disappear
Not everyone who loses balance simply loses control over their magic. Some lose far more.
In Ananthara, Thal’ithara is not a separate force that exists independently from the individual. It is the external manifestation of identity itself. Because of this, prolonged instability does not only affect magical control. It slowly begins affecting the person as well.
When someone remains disconnected from their authentic self for too long, continuously suppresses who they truly are, or allows prolonged Chaos Magic to destabilize their connection to Thal’ithara, the bond between identity and magic begins breaking down entirely. This process eventually leads to what is known as becoming The Faded.
A person who slowly begins losing not only control over their magic — but themselves.
How Does Someone Become The Faded?
There are many paths that may gradually lead someone toward complete magical collapse.
Years of living against the authentic self can slowly lead someone toward becoming Faded. Those who spend years forcing themselves to become someone they were never meant to be slowly begin disconnecting from the identity their Thal’ithara was originally shaped around. As this connection weakens, magic begins destabilizing alongside it.
Complete loss of self can also cause the connection to collapse. If someone sinks deeply enough into hopelessness, emotional numbness, or self-denial that they no longer recognize who they are, their connection to Thal’ithara begins collapsing as well. Not as punishment. But because magic can only exist as an extension of the self. And there is less and less of that self remaining.
Prolonged Chaos Magic is another path toward becoming Faded. When emotional imbalance, trauma, obsession, or internal suffering continuously shape magical expression over long periods of time, the connection between identity and Thal’ithara begins deteriorating permanently. Magic no longer reflects the authentic self. It begins reflecting suffering alone.
Forced Magical Severance can also lead to this state. Ancient rituals and forgotten methods are said to exist that can forcibly sever an individual’s connection to Thal’ithara. Because magic is inseparably connected to identity itself, forcibly removing magic damages far more than magical ability alone. Parts of memory, emotional connection, and personal identity may disappear alongside it. Some believe remnants of these rituals still survive from the time of the Blood Reign.
What Happens To The Faded?
As the connection between identity and Thal’ithara collapses, the individual gradually begins losing the very parts of themselves that once defined who they were.
They lose access to magic. Thal’ithara can no longer manifest because the connection between self and magic has begun collapsing completely.
They may experience emotional emptiness. Many describe feeling hollow, disconnected, or strangely absent from their own emotions.
They begin losing their identity. Memories begin fading. Personal desires weaken. Passion disappears. Some can no longer remember what once mattered to them.
The self begins fragmenting. Over time, the person may lose connection to the emotional and psychological foundation that once defined who they truly were.
Eventually only fragments remain. Not dead. But no longer fully themselves.
Is There A Way Back?
Recovery becomes increasingly difficult the longer someone remains disconnected from themselves. But legends speak of rare cases where individuals managed to return.
Through deep inner healing, some stories tell of individuals entering the Sacred Wylds and confronting the deepest parts of themselves until fragments of identity slowly began returning. Few survive such journeys unchanged.
Through profound emotional awakening, a deeply meaningful experience may, in rare cases, force someone to reconnect with forgotten parts of themselves strong enough to begin restoring what was lost.
Through external intervention, ancient stories speak of powerful spiritual beings or forgotten rituals capable of helping restore fractured connections between identity and Thal’ithara. But such knowledge is believed to be nearly lost.
Not everyone who loses themselves can return. Because in Ananthara, magic is not something a person possesses. It is part of who they are.
And when too much of the self disappears… magic disappears alongside it.
