How to Structure your Worldbuilding Process | 3 Things i learned

It’s finally done! On March 28th, 2025, I completed the worldbuilding for the first kingdom in my fantasy world – a huge milestone for me. Half a year of ideas, questions, and structuring went into this, and honestly, I’m sure I’ll continue adding details over time. But for now, the foundation is set, and it feels incredible!

Maybe this sounds like “just one kingdom” to some, but the beginning is often the hardest. With this blueprint, I hope it will be faster to develop the other kingdoms – and then the real work begins: the books! I’ve been working on a story in parallel, but now there are no excuses.

The Origin of shaping My World

Ultimately, my worldbuilding didn’t start with the first kingdom but much earlier – with the origin story of my world.

  • How did the world come to be?

  • What goals did the gods have?

  • What major conflict shapes everything?

With these foundations, I began shaping my first kingdom. I asked questions about its role in the world, its structure, society, and culture. It was a constant puzzle of new ideas, historical events, and magical concepts.

And it didn’t stop with the big questions. Even small details like flora, fauna, and economic systems influence the lives of the inhabitants. Which herbs exist? How is trade conducted? All of this creates a living, believable world.

3 Things i’ve learned

What I’ve learned: structure is everything. My notes were scattered everywhere at first – Google Docs full of disorganized ideas. My advice:

  1. Collect your ideas in one place.

  2. Later, organize them into a structured document.

  3. Create a blueprint that can always be expanded.

This way, you keep an overview without losing great ideas.

My Blueprint for Thal’draen

  • Origin & Meaning

  • Key Figures & Governance

  • Role in the World & Political Structures

  • Society, Culture & Magic System

  • Technology, Infrastructure & Economy

  • Conflicts & Challenges

  • Flora, Fauna & Resources

This roadmap helps me develop future kingdoms faster.

Reflection Questions for Your Own Worldbuilding:

  • Do you have a clear origin story and central conflict?

  • What unique elements make your setting stand out?

  • Is there a balance between magic, technology, and society?

  • Is your magic system logically thought out?

  • How do politics, religion, and culture influence your world?

Explore, question, and expand – that’s the path to a fully realized fantasy world.
